Environmental Policy Statement by Gavin James – Managing Director. The Helping Hand Company designs, manufactures, installs and services patient handling equipment, postural care products and aids for daily living. As Managing Director I take environmental issues very seriously and actively ensure that environmental aspects are taken into consideration during every stage of the Company’s business activities.

My environmental policy is to prevent pollution, minimise waste and conduct our business in such a way as to consider the environment at all times. Life-cycle analysis is used to understand the effect that our products may have on the environment. The Company will endeavour to optimise the balance between environmental impact and product performance by using resources efficiently in each area of the business, and recycle wherever possible.

The Company works alongside Hereford Waste Paper and Salvage, BIFFA, BJ Metals and Alutrade to recycle waste paper/cardboard, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, and general waste. We also operate an approved disposal system for batteries. We endeavour to minimise the use of raw materials in all processes, starting with the design stage, and use recycled materials wherever feasible for environmental, technical and financial reasons. This includes reviewing our use of packaging materials which is an area with great potential for material saving. This will, in turn, reduce our customers’ waste management problem. All members of staff are encouraged to walk or cycle to work, where the distance involved is reasonable. The Company have also canvassed the local council authorities requesting improved pedestrian and cycle routes to the various trading estates adjacent to the town. My objective is to establish and continually improve an Environmental Management System (EMS) within the Company. This is under development, based on ISO 14001, within an emerging ‘Quality System’ which I have recently initiated, and is being overseen by the Production Manager.

The Company has signed-up with Groundwork West Midlands Environmental Business Services (EBS), to provide us with an information, monitoring and advisory service to assist with the development of our EMS. All heaters in the factory are fitted with automatic timers and thermostats, and managers have been issued with room thermometers to ensure that heating systems are being used to maintain the correct temperature in the working environment, in accordance with Health and Safety requirements. Energy usage is monitored on a monthly basis to identify any adverse consumption, or the positive effect of any energy saving measures that have been introduced. I have formed an ‘ECO Committee’ to review environmental performance within the Company, and look into ways of further improving waste management, energy management and all other associated environmental issues, and to act as the focal point for Groundwork West Midlands EBS.
